Cleansing French Style

by Sophie Brown

After years of habitual laziness in regards to taking make up off,  waking up with panda eyes after a uni sesh most nights, I began to take cleansing seriously when I got to my twenties. I realised if I didn’t want to end up looking like a bag of spuds (if this hadn't already happened), I would have to start taking my make up removal seriously and find a good solution. I used wipes for years which are a great fast fix but my face never felt fully clean. After researching into the subject and talking to a few fellow skin obsessives including a Space NK employee, I found out that most wipes only take a thin layer of dirt away leaving further layers of dirty skin behind.  I wanted to find a good cleanser that made my face feel fresh and squeaky clean and on my quest I came across the French and their marvellous pharmacy lines of skincare.

If you go to make up sites and blogs such as Lisa Eldidge, Charlotte Tilbury or one of my faves, Into the Gloss, you will inevitably come across rave reviews for French skincare. The great thing too is that these products are reasonably priced in comparison to brands like Clarins or Clinique and available in pharmacys all around France. If you find yourself in Paris, go to the Pharmacis Anglaise on 62 Avenue Champs Elysées, by far the cheapest place to get french skincare in Paris. If you don't get to France much though don't worry, I get mine off www.escentual.com.

My favourite two cleansers are Bioderma Bioderma Sensibio H2O - Micelle Solution and Avene Micellar Lotion - Cleanser and Make-up Remover. They are both micellar solutions so they are a water like consistency and are so refreshing used with a cotton wool pad. They take every last scrap of make up off your face, including heavy eye make up,  so need for a separate eye make up remover. They also leave your skin feeling clean but not stripped off its natural moisture or tight like some liquid cleansers. From the minute I began using both of these cleansers my pores became visibly smaller, my chin breakouts virtually disappeared and the texture of my skin transformed.  Many top fashion make up artists use these products backstage at fashion week as the models are walking in so many different shows, they need a gentle and effective remover so their face doesn't suffer from so many make up changes. It is a true beauty expert recommendation.

The bottles last for a good while, depending on how thorough you are with your routine, I tend to get through a bottle every couple of months. I also use the Avene Thermale Spring Water Spray after cleansing. It is just an extra refreshing addition to cleansing, calming down sensitive skin. I just pat it dry with a flannel and I swear it’s like being at a spa its so soothing. They may cost a little more than wipes or high street cleansers but they are totally worth it, I guarantee you will see a big difference in your skin if you give them a try.
